Dr. Derek Vigon is a licensed clinical and sport psychologist in Arlington (Rosslyn) Virginia, and has an office location that is accessible to the metro Washington D.C. area. Dr. Vigon has worked in a number of clinical settings including hospital inpatient, community mental health, university counseling centers, and Division 1 athletic departments. This range of experience has allowed him to work with individuals spanning diverse presenting problems and multicultural backgrounds. Dr. Vigon has training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Contemporary Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and Motivational Interviewing. While Dr. Vigon works with a wide range of adolescent and adult clients, his area of expertise is the treatment of anxiety disorders.
Additionally, Dr. Vigon has received extensive training in the treatment of depressive disorders, post-traumatic stress, disordered eating, identity related concerns, relationship concerns, and family of origin issues. He also has experience providing performance enhancement psychological skills training to athletes and performers. Dr. Vigon works from an integrative framework,
and aims to empower clients by providing a safe therapeutic relationship that facilitates trust, authenticity, and collaboration. Dr. Vigon began his clinical training on the south side of Chicago and has worked in many underserved areas of the country. He is a strong believer in social justice and aims to serve as an ally for his clients with multidimensional diverse backgrounds.
Dr. Vigon earned a doctorate in clinical psychology (Psy.D.) from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University, San Francisco. He completed a Masters at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and a Bachelors in Psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Vigon completed both an APA-accredited doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship, with a concentration in disordered eating at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Vigon is a member of the Clinical/Counseling Sport Psychology Association (CCSPA). Dr. Vigon is listed as a provider in the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee's (USOPC) Mental Health registry to serve Team USA athletes. Dr Vigon is also listed as part of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) clinician directory.
In addition to his private practice, he currently serves as a staff psychologist and Coordinator of Sport Psychology in a joint appointment between the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at George Mason University. In his role as a staff psychologist and Mason CAPS Assistant Director, he conducts individual and group therapy, and crisis intervention with Mason students. Dr. Vigon's main role is serving as a member of the Center for Sports Performance within Mason's Division 1 Intercollegiate Athletics Department, providing embedded clinical sport psychology services to Mason student-athletes, group workshops to Mason’s sports teams, and consultation to coaches and athletic department staff. Dr. Vigon was also hired to consult with the NFL's Detroit Lions. Dr. Vigon has worked in team settings, and individually with athletes from the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and has presented on mental health for the NCAA's Atlantic 10 Conference. His dissertation intervention tool, Psych Beats™ was performed with Olympic marathon runners in San Francisco. Prior to Colorado, he worked in the athletic department at the University of Arkansas providing clinical sport psychology services to Razorback student-athletes. Dr. Vigon has also worked with student-athletes from Santa Rosa Junior College and University of Illinois, Chicago.
